Indie Winemakers' Tasting Notes

Our mission is to provide unbiased opinions of the wine being offered. These notes come from up to 10 guests who tasted this wine in a blind tasting format (wine is concealed so their identity is unknown). Why this format? Tasting blind completely throws out any hype associated with a certain winery, style, price point, etc; it forces the taster to accept what is in the glass without any predetermined notions. Our guests utilize Robert Parker's Glossary of Wine Terms for their comments for consistency purposes. In addition, we utilize the wine aroma wheel to enhance one’s ability to describe the complexity of wine flavor. Notes are posted on this wine during the tasting to ensure they accurately reflect the impressions.

Tasting Notes

  • Group Notes: This is a dramatic, intense Super Tuscan. In the glass, the wine is clear with a medium red/orange tint. There is a slight orange rim color variation. This has a huge cherry scent with a tinge of dust/gravel in the background. Thick on the tongue, this dense wine shows tannins, cherry and plumb and a very long finish. While fruity in taste, it is dry as a bone. Great now, this is definitely a +10 year cellar worthy wine.

Technical Notes - Showket Vineyards 2005 Asante Sana (Super Tuscan) - Oakville, Napa Valley

About the Vineyards

The vineyard, which is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese experiences slightly cooler temperatures in the summer than the valley floor and slightly warmer ones in the winter. Because of the elevation and orientation of the vineyard no frost protection is required. The soil is clay-loam type that is very rocky. The vines are stressed sufficiently to produce excellent wines. The tonnage is considerably less than what vines produce on the valley floor giving intensity in flavor that can only be produced in such a pristine hillside vineyard. The vineyard is managed by the well-respected and highly reputable Pina Vineyard Management.

About the Vintage

2005 had unseasonably late spring rains which delayed flowering and caused concern about crop loss and mold problems. Fortunately, the fears were unfounded. The summer months were mild and pleasant followed by continued warm, nearly perfect ripening conditions in the early fall. Continued warm, dry weather allowed for extended hang time and great flavor concentration. Virtually the whole valley brought in an exceptionally fine vintage. The 2005 vintage will be long remembered for bringing us remarkable quality!

Winemaker's tasting notes

The 2005 Asante sana`s initial scents of plum and balsa, pull you in, but it`s the deep black cherry and hints of vanilla that keep your focus. On the palate it fans out and the wine`s cabernet sauvignon component blooms in the form of a rich mid-palate and lingering finish. Its Italian heritage shows itself as its lively texture emerges.

About the Winery

Located on the slope of the Vaca Range, the Showket Family started first as serious growers. Before producing wines under their own label, the Showkets sold some of their fruit to top wineries like Caymus, Dalle Valle, and Shafer. The vineyard’s pedigree is unquestionable. Their background has all the makings of soon being one of Napa Valley's star wineries.
